Special Agents Who Lost Their Lives in the Performance of a Law Enforcement Duty Agents Killed in Performance of Duty

The FBI also honors those Agents who lose their lives in the performance of their duty, but not necessarily during an adversarial confrontation.  This would include situations involving "hot pursuit" of criminals and when death results from the Agent taking immediate action to save one or more lives.  A separate plaque memorializing the sacrifice of these Agents reads: "In memory of Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who lost their lives in the performance of a law enforcement duty."  Fourteen Special Agents have been honored for having given their lives in the performance of a law enforcement duty. Albert L. Ingle, born 05/08/1905 in New Albany, MS.  Lived in New Albany, MS. prior to entrance on duty. Died 11/24/1931 in Durham, NC.

On November 24, 1931, Special Agent Albert L. Ingle, who had been with the Bureau less than one year, died of a gunshot wound in Durham, North Carolina.  At the direction of the U.S. Attorney, SA Ingle and a private detective had been moving a package of evidence in connection with an investigation into possible federal violations.   During this process, the weapon carried by the detective fell through a hole in his pocket to the ground and discharged a bullet, which fatally wounded SA Ingle.

Percy E. Fox Worth, born 11/29/1906 in Purvis, MS.  Lived in Burns, OK. prior to entrance on duty. Died 1/15/1943 near Paramaribo, Surinam

On January 15, 1943, Assistant Director Percy E. Foxworth of the New York Field Office and Special Agent Harold Dennis Haberfeld were killed in a military aircraft accident near Paramaribo, Surinam.  In connection with the war effort, they were taking a roundabout route to North Africa at the specific request of General Dwight D. Eisenhower to perform a secret mission of critical importance.  The cause of the crash of the airplane was never ascertained.  Although 35 people were on board the aircraft, search teams were only able to locate sufficient remains to be placed in a single casket, which was returned to the United States 5 years later and buried in a grave at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, al Cemetery.  Following AD Foxworth's death, a liberty ship, named the S.S. P.E. Foxworth, was launched in February, 1943.

Harold Dennis Haberfeld, born 02/08/1912 in Rochester, PA.  Lived in San Carlos, CA. prior to entrance on duty. Died 01/15/1943 near Paramaribo, Surinam.

On January 15, 1943, Assistant Director Percy E. On July 14, 1943, 27-year-old Special Agent Richard Blackstone Brown, a relatively new Agent, was killed in an automobile accident in Dallas, Texas.  The FBI was conducting an intensive investigation throughout several regions of the country to locate fugitive Albert Earl Walker and his wife, who was also a fugitive.  It was determined that Walker's wife had registered for war rations in a specific area in Dallas where Walker's brother resided.  On the day of Brown's death, FBI Agents had shown photographs of the Walkers to the owner of a local nightclub.  Later that evening, the owner telephoned the Dallas Office to inform Agents that Walker and his wife had just entered her nightclub.  SA Brown and another Agent proceeded to the club in a Bureau car.  They were using a red light and siren when their car was involved in an accident with another vehicle.  SA Brown was killed, and the other Agent was seriously injured.

Trenwith S. Basford, born 10/05/1916 in Red Lodge, MT.  Lived in Minneapolis, MN. prior to entrance on duty. Died 08/25/1977 in Dewey Lake in MN.

On August 25, 1977, Special Agents Trenwith S. Basford and Mark A. Kirkland were killed in northern Minnesota as the result of an airplane crash into Dewey Lake.  SA Basford was piloting his personally owned plane, which had been approved for official use.  The Agents were assisting Agents of the Duluth Resident Agency in conducting an aerial surveillance when the crash occurred.  At the time of his death, SA Basford was 60 years old and had served over 35 years in the FBI.  SA Kirkland was 33 years of age.

Mark A. Kirkland, born 08/08/1944 in Salt Lake City, UT.  Lived in Centerville, UT. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 08/25/1977 in Dewey Lake in MN.

On August 25, 1977, Special Agents Trenwith S. Basford and Mark A. Terry Burnett Hereford, born 07/24/1948 in Pomona, CA.  Lived in Poway, CA. prior to entrance on duty.  Died on 12/16/1982 near Montgomery, OH.

On December 16, 1982, Special Agents Terry Burnett Hereford, Charles L. Ellington, Robert W. Conners, and Michael James Lunch were killed in a Bureau airplane accident near Montgomery, Ohio.  The Agents were accompanying a bank fraud and embezzlement subject, Carl Henry Johnson, and an individual from the law firm representing Johnson to Cincinnati.  They were attempting to locate $50,000 in embezzled money, which Johnson had hidden in that area.  The plane, piloted by SAs Hereford and Conners, crashed on approach to Cincinnati's Lunken Airport near Montgomery, and all aboard were killed.  There were indications the aircraft encountered altitude read-out problems, was flying at a low altitude, and hit some wires before it went down.

Robert W. Conners, born 10/12/1946 in Dayton, OH.  Lived in Stillwater, OK. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 12/16/1982 near Montgomery, OH.

Michael James Lynch, born 09/21/1947 in Lima, OH.  Lived in St. Mary's, OH. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 12/16/1982 near Montgomery, OH.

James K. McAllister, born 07/14/1951 in Columbia, KY.  Lived in Columbia, KY. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 04/18/1986 in Quantico, VA.

On April 19, 1986, Special Agent James K. McAllister, a member of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT), died after falling from a helicopter during a training exercise at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.  SA McAllister was an original member of the 50-member anti-terrorist unit, which became operational during September, 1983, to provide an effective civilian response capability and a substantial deterrent to terrorism.

Scott K. Carey, born 07/16/1952 in Newburgh, NY.  Lived in Schenectady, NY. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 05/10/1988 in Middletown, NY.

Special Agent Scott K. Carey, age 35, was an instructor assigned to the FBI driver training program.  On May 9, 1988, while on duty instructing a defensive driving school at the Special Operations Center, New Paltz, New York, SA Carey was the victim of a serious automobile accident.  SA Carey was taken to a Middletown, New York, hospital, where he died the following day as a result of injuries sustained during that accident.

Stanley Ronquest, Jr., born 10/01/1939 in St. Louis, MO.  Lived in St. Louis, MO. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 03/11/1992 in Kansas City, MO.

On the night of March 11, 1992, Special Agent Stanley Ronquest, Jr., was shot and killed when an assailant attempted to rob him outside of a Kansas City, Missouri, hotel.  SA Ronquest, who had served the FBI for over 21 years, was assigned to the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters.  At the time of his death, SA Ronquest was on official business in the FBI's Kansas City Field Office.

Paul A. Leveille, born 10/14/1959 in Bangor, ME.   Lived in Berwick, ME. prior to entrance on duty. Died on 09/01/1999 in Colorado Springs, CO.

On September 1, 1999, Special Agent Paul Andrew LeVeille, a licensed FBI pilot, was killed in an aircraft accident while participating in an FBI-sponsored mountain flying pilot training course in Colorado Springs, Colorado. SA LeVeille, at the controls of the Piper Archer aircraft, was executing a box canyon turn when his aircraft crashed. SA LeVeille, along with his flight instructor, was killed instantly as a result of the impact of the aircraft into the mountain. SA LeVeille was assigned to the El Paso Division at the time of his death.

Robert Hardesty, born 03/16/1965. Died on 06/02/2005 in Falls Church, VA.

Robert Russell (Rob) Hardesty - Special Agent Hardesty succumbed to injuries sustained eight days earlier during a training exercise at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Agent Hardesty fell 20 feet off an airplane wing during an FBI SWAT team training exercise while he was practicing aircraft entry techniques. He was transported to Inova Health Systems in Falls Church, Virginia where he remained until he died from complications as a result of being paralyzed in the fall. Agent Hardesty had served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for three years and was assigned to a Resident Office in Bloomington, Illinois. He previously served with the Indiana State Excise Police for six years and the Porter County, Indiana, Sheriff's Department for seven years.

Gregory J. Rahoi, Died on 12/06/2006 in Fredericksburg, VA.

Special Agent Gregory Rahoi was shot and killed while participating in a live fire training exercise on Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. He was flown to Mary Washington Hospital, in Fredericksburg, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Special Agent Rahoi had served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 9 years. Before joining the FBI, he served on the Madison and Shorewood Wisconsin Police Departments. He served with the Hostage Rescue Team for the past 6 years. He is survived by his fiancee, parents, and sister.

Barry Lee Bush, Died on 04/05/2007 in Newark, NJ

Special Agent Barry Bush was accidentally shot and killed by another agent while he and other agents conducted surveillance on a group of three suspects wanted for robbing several banks in central New Jersey.

Agent Bush was in a car occupied by agents that tried to block one suspect acting as a scout for his accomplices outside the PNC Bank in Readington, New Jersey. A van full of agents pulled up next to the suspect's car, and one of the agents accidentally fired his rifle as he leaped out. The bullet struck Agent Bush's car and clipped him in the armpit, where he was not covered by his bulletproof vest. Two of suspects were apprehended immediately, and the third was apprehended the next day. Special Agent Bush had served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
